AI notes: In August 1941, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met secretly off the coast of Newfoundland to formulate what became known as the Atlantic Charter, a statement of shared principles for the postwar world despite the United States not yet being formally involved in World War II. The Charter outlined key goals, including a rejection of territorial expansion, the right of all peoples to choose their own governments, access to global trade and raw materials, disarmament and the establishment of lasting international security, and international cooperation to improve social and economic conditions. Though not a binding treaty, the Atlantic Charter symbolized the growing Anglo-American alliance, provided moral guidance for the Allied cause, and laid the foundation for the creation of the United Nations, serving as a blueprint for postwar peace and global collaboration.
