background: Josef Kramer, infamously known as the “Beast of Belsen,” was the commandant of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and previously held a high-ranking position at Auschwitz, where he oversaw the brutal conditions and mass killings of prisoners. Under his command at Bergen-Belsen, thousands of inmates died from starvation, disease, and abuse, as the camp became severely overcrowded and lacked basic sanitation. Following the liberation of the camp by British forces in April 1945, Kramer was arrested and put on trial at the Belsen Trial in Lüneburg, Germany, where he faced charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The tribunal found him guilty of personally supervising and ordering atrocities, including the mistreatment, starvation, and murder of countless prisoners. Kramer was sentenced to death and was executed by hanging at Hamelin Prison on December 13, 1945, marking one of the earliest postwar prosecutions of high-ranking Nazi officials for their role in the Holocaust.
