1916 Pancho Villa Expedition...

Item # 721634

May 09, 1916

EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, May 9, 1916

* Pancho Villa Expedition - Mexico Revolution
* Post attack on Columbus, New Mexico
* United States Army operation

The front page has a nice banner headline: "AMERICANS ROUT VILLISTAS" with subheads. (see images) Nice for display. Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
Complete with 16 pages, a little irregular along the spine, small library stamp within the masthead, generally very nice.

AI notes: In May 1916, the United States’ punitive expedition into northern Mexico, launched to capture the revolutionary leader Pancho Villa following his raid on Columbus, New Mexico, was in full force under Brigadier General John J. Pershing. U.S. troops faced rugged terrain, extreme heat, and supply difficulties while pursuing Villa’s elusive cavalry across Chihuahua and other northern states. Despite engaging in several skirmishes and encountering occasional resistance from Villa’s men, the expedition was largely unsuccessful in its primary goal of capturing him, as Villa relied on guerrilla tactics and intimate knowledge of the region to evade pursuit. The campaign strained diplomatic relations with the Mexican government, which opposed the incursion, and revealed both the logistical challenges of cross-border operations and the limits of conventional military tactics against highly mobile irregular forces. By the end of May, the expedition had inflicted some damage on Villa’s forces and secured temporary control of key border areas, but the elusive revolutionary remained free, foreshadowing the eventual withdrawal of U.S. forces in early 1917.
