background: Carl Switzer, the actor famously known as Alfalfa from the Our Gang (Little Rascals) comedies, was killed on January 21, 1959, at the age of 31 under violent and controversial circumstances. After struggling to transition from child stardom to adult roles, Switzer worked sporadically in Hollywood and also pursued activities such as hunting and guiding. On the night of his death, he went to the home of Moses “Bud” Stiltz, a fellow hunter, reportedly to collect a loan or settle a financial dispute. An argument ensued, during which Switzer allegedly threatened Stiltz with a firearm, and Stiltz shot him in what was later ruled justifiable homicide. Switzer’s death abruptly ended a life that had once captured the hearts of audiences nationwide as a mischievous, freckle-faced child, highlighting the often tragic trajectories of former child stars struggling in adulthood.
