AI notes: On December 19, 1948, during the final stages of the Chinese Civil War, the city of Nanking (Nanjing)—then the capital of Nationalist China—was engulfed in crisis as Communist forces advanced rapidly through eastern China. The Communist People’s Liberation Army (PLA), fresh from major victories in the Huaihai Campaign, was closing in on the city after shattering Nationalist defenses in nearby regions. Inside Nanking, Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist government faced panic and disintegration: troops deserted, morale collapsed, and evacuation of officials and supplies to Canton and Chongqing began. Although no full-scale battle occurred on that specific day, December 19 marked a turning point when it became clear the Nationalists could no longer hold the capital. Within a month, the Communists captured Nanking (April 1949 officially), sealing the fall of the Nationalist regime on the mainland.
