AI notes: In 1935, King Ananda Mahidol of Siam (later Thailand), who was then only about 10 years old, was living in Switzerland with his family following his uncle King Prajadhipok’s abdication. Having ascended the throne that year as Rama VIII, Ananda was still a child monarch and continued his education in Lausanne under the care of his mother, Princess Srinagarindra. During this period, he developed a love for music—particularly the piano. Photographs from the mid-1930s show the young king seated at the instrument, often in his family’s Lausanne home, demonstrating both discipline and natural musical talent. Music, along with photography and sports, was one of his favorite pastimes, and his piano playing became one of the earliest glimpses the public had of the thoughtful and artistic boy who would later become a beloved symbol of modern Siam.
