THE VILLAGE VOICE (weekly), Greenwich Village, New York City, Feb. 8, 1983
* Very early Madonna photo in social media
* Singer - songwriter - actress - model
* First week of her "Queen of Pop" music career
Page 25 has a extremely early photo in social media of a young "Madonna" with brief text. Here she was photoed on the street the same week her debut single "Everybody" was released. (see images) This was a few months prior to her debut album "Madonna" and about a year and a half prior to her iconic "Like a Virgin" album release.
AI notes: The first known photograph of Madonna published in The Village Voice as a musician (post modeling career) was on February 8, 1983, The Village Voice featured a photo of Madonna in its "On the Street" column by Amy Arbus. Taken on St. Marks Place, the image showed Madonna in a distinctive outfit during the same week her debut single "Everybody" was released. The candid photo captured her early style and became iconic in both her career and 1980s street fashion. Arbus’s column ran from 1980–1990, spotlighting unique, standout individuals from New York’s cultural scene. This photograph captures Madonna at a pivotal moment in her career, just as she was beginning to gain recognition in New York City's vibrant music scene.
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
The Village Voice was an American counterculture newspaper known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. It introduced free-form, high-spirited, and passionate journalism into the public discourse - a tradition it maintained throughout its 60+ year history. It is quite common to find great political cartoons, satirical cartoons and articles, thought-provoking editorials, and ads and reviews for both concerts and theater productions - both on and off Broadway. Many iconic writers and musicians credit their appearance in The Village Voice for at least a portion of their success.
