AI notes: In 1927, during the Cristero War in Mexico, a horrific train massacre occurred near La Barca, Jalisco, when Cristero forces led by priest-general José Reyes Vega attacked a government train believed to be carrying money. During the raid, a shootout with federal troops resulted in the death of Vega’s younger brother, and in retaliation, Vega ordered the wooden train cars to be set on fire, trapping passengers inside. Eyewitness reports indicate that 51 civilians were burned alive, making it one of the deadliest single incidents of the conflict. The massacre caused national and international outrage, severely tarnishing the Cristero cause, and underscored the brutal violence that characterized the religious rebellion against the anti-clerical Mexican government. Vega himself was killed later that year at the Battle of Tepatitlán, but the memory of the train massacre remains a grim symbol of the human cost of the war.
