background: The 2003 Station Nightclub fire occurred on February 20 in West Warwick, Rhode Island, during a concert by the band Great White, when pyrotechnics ignited flammable polyurethane foam used for soundproofing near the stage. The fire spread almost instantly, filling the club with smoke and flames within minutes. With only two main exits and an inadequate alarm system, patrons panicked, leading to a deadly crush at the doors. In total, 100 people died—mostly from smoke inhalation and trampling—and over 200 were injured. Investigations revealed that the rapid spread of the fire was fueled by the highly combustible foam and a lack of safety measures, prompting criminal charges against the club owner, who later pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. The tragedy spurred nationwide changes in fire safety regulations for nightclubs, including stricter requirements for flame-retardant materials, sprinkler systems, and clearly marked, accessible emergency exits.
