AI notes: Russell "Slim Gray" Gibson was a notorious American bank robber and member of the infamous Barker-Karpis Gang during the Great Depression. Born around 1903, he began his criminal career with smaller gangs in Oklahoma before joining forces with Alvin Karpis and the Barker brothers, Fred and Arthur. Gibson participated in daring bank and train robberies, including a high-profile $75,000 heist from a bank messenger in Oklahoma City, and became involved in the gang’s kidnappings of William Hamm Jr. and Edward Bremer Jr. After escaping county jail before his trial, he continued his criminal exploits until January 8, 1935, when the FBI raided a Chicago apartment where he was hiding. Armed with a Browning automatic rifle and a pistol, Gibson tried to fight his way out but was fatally shot despite wearing a bulletproof vest. His death, along with the arrest of fellow gang members, marked a major blow to the Barker-Karpis Gang, and a notebook recovered from him provided federal agents with key information about the gang’s operations, contributing to the eventual dismantling of one of the most notorious criminal organizations of the 1930s.
