AI notes: Albert Fish was arrested on December 13, 1934, after a six-year investigation into the disappearance of 10-year-old Grace Budd, whom he had kidnapped and murdered in 1928. His capture came when he sent an anonymous, grotesque letter to the Budd family, detailing the murder and cannibalization of their daughter. Investigators traced the letter back to Fish through a piece of stationery marked with the name of a company where he had briefly worked, leading them to a boarding house in Manhattan. Detective William F. King apprehended Fish there, and during questioning, Fish calmly confessed not only to Grace’s murder but also to numerous other crimes involving child abuse, murder, and cannibalism. His demeanor was disturbingly composed, and he described his acts in chilling detail, claiming he was driven by religious visions and voices. Fish was later declared sane, tried in March 1935, and executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison on January 16, 1936, bringing an end to one of the most horrifying criminal cases in American history.
