AI notes: On August 14, 1947, Pakistan was created as a separate dominion from British India, one day before India’s independence, in what became known as the Partition of India, the largest and most traumatic division of territory in modern history; conceived as a homeland for Muslims under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan originally included both West Pakistan (present-day Pakistan) and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), while India remained a secular but Hindu-majority state under Jawaharlal Nehru; the hurried British withdrawal and the drawing of new borders by the Radcliffe Commission sparked massive upheaval, leading to the displacement of more than 14 million people, sectarian violence that claimed up to one million lives, and the enduring hostility between India and Pakistan, especially over the disputed territory of Kashmir.
