background: On November 4, 1995, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in Tel Aviv after addressing a massive peace rally attended by tens of thousands of supporters in Kings of Israel Square (later renamed Rabin Square). As he walked to his car following the event, Rabin was shot at close range by Yigal Amir, a 25-year-old ultranationalist who opposed the Oslo Accords and believed Rabin’s pursuit of peace with the Palestinians endangered Israel’s future. Rabin was rushed to Ichilov Hospital, where doctors worked to save him, but he died from his wounds shortly afterward, shocking the nation and the world. His assassination, the first of an Israeli prime minister, marked a devastating turning point in the Middle East peace process, leaving deep divisions in Israeli society and halting much of the momentum toward reconciliation with the Palestinians.
