Earliest Tiger Woods PGA ambitions ?...

Item # 717901

January 27, 1992

SPORT'S SECTION ONLY of the Los Angles Times, Jan. 27, 1992

* 15 Year old High School student Tiger Woods
* Initial announcement he will play in a PGA tourney
* Nissan Los Angeles Open in Pacific Palisades

* Washington Redskins win Super Bowl XXVI
* Quarterback Mark Rypien voted MVP
* National Football League vs. Buffalo Bills

Although this sport's section features the Washington Redskins winning Super Bowl XXVI, an editorial on page 7 with statements from Tiger and Earl Woods is a fascinating find here. This was when a very young Tiger Woods announced he was going to compete in the Nissan Los Angeles Open about a month later. This would be his very first attempt to compete in a PGA sanctioned golf tournament. And I would assume this editorial would only be published by this local publication making it an extremely rare item. The top of page 7 of this section has a three column heading that reads: "A Young Lion Named Tiger Is Set to Make Tour History in L.A. Open" (see images) Could this be the earliest mention of Woods' transformation to the pros ? At the end of this editorial, Earl Woods explains how he came up with the name "Tiger".
Complete sport's section only with all 22 pages, great condition.

AI notes: At just 15 years old, golf prodigy Tiger Woods has announced he will compete in the 1992 Los Angeles Open, scheduled for February 28 to March 1. Already making waves in the amateur golf world, Woods is set to take a major step forward by participating in this prestigious professional-level tournament.
Born on December 30, 1975, Tiger has amassed a remarkable junior and amateur record, gaining national attention for his exceptional skill and maturity on the course. His entry into the Los Angeles Open will be one of his first opportunities to measure his talents against some of the best professional golfers.
The Los Angeles Open, known for attracting top talent, provides an ideal platform for Woods to showcase his potential and gain invaluable experience. Golf fans and experts alike are watching closely to see how the young phenom performs on this prominent stage.
