AI notes: The 1935 Prentiss bank robbery occurred on January 22 in Prentiss, Mississippi, when a group of armed men raided the Bank of Prentiss and escaped with around $17,000 in cash and bonds. Using submachine guns and pistols, the robbers quickly took control of the bank, held staff and customers at gunpoint, and fired shots during their getaway. Although the incident caused alarm, no fatalities were reported. The boldness of the heist captured public attention amid the turbulent era of Depression-era crime.
Raymond Hamilton, a former member of the infamous Barrow Gang, was suspected of involvement due to the robbery’s style and eyewitness reports linking him to similar crimes in the region. Though never formally charged with the Prentiss robbery, Hamilton’s reputation as a violent outlaw and fugitive made him a prime suspect. He was captured in April 1935 and executed in Texas the following month for earlier crimes. The Prentiss robbery remains part of his criminal legacy, despite no definitive proof of his direct participation.
