Boxer Max Schmeling death (?)... Judy Garland marries...

Item # 717444

May 29, 1941

MINNEAPOLIS STAR JOURNAL, Minnesota, May 29, 1941

* Boxing - Boxer Max Schmeling death ?
* Turns out to be a false report from the Nazis
* Actress Judy Garland marries composer Dave Rose

The front page has: "Mystery Still Surrounds Fate of Max Schmeling", with a subheading: "Reported Killed in Crete, But Story Not Confirmed. The article includes a photo of him with other German soldiers. Similar reports were printed throughout the world, but time would show the news to be based on a false Nazi report. He would actually live to be 99 years old.
Also on the front page is an article headed: "Judy Garland, Movie Star From Minnesota, Betrothed", with subheading: "Singer to Become Bride of Dave Rose, Musical Composer". A small photo of each is included.

Continues on page 9 with a two column photo of Schmeling in army uniform.

Other news of the day throughout. Rag edition in great condition.

Item from our most recent catalog - #358, released for September, 2025
