background: On June 20, 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed the United Nations and reaffirmed his "Atoms for Peace" initiative, originally introduced in 1953. This program aimed to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy while preventing nuclear weapons proliferation. Around this date in 1955, Eisenhower proposed the creation of an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee peaceful nuclear activities globally. The plan reflected Cold War tensions but also a hope for cooperation between superpowers like the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Eisenhower sought to reduce fears of nuclear war by showing how atomic energy could benefit humanity through medicine, energy, and agriculture.
