background: On October 26, 1960, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was released on bond from Georgia’s Reidsville State Prison, where he had been held after a judge sentenced him to hard labor for a probation violation stemming from a prior traffic charge. His imprisonment, following his arrest during a sit-in at an Atlanta department store, sparked national outrage. The situation drew the attention of the Kennedy campaign, with Robert F. Kennedy intervening by calling the judge, helping secure King’s release. This act significantly boosted support for John F. Kennedy among Black voters in the 1960 presidential election.
