background: The Washington Redskins faced the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII, played on January 30, 1983, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The Redskins, led by head coach Joe Gibbs and running back John Riggins, defeated the Dolphins 27–17 to win their first Super Bowl title. Riggins was named Super Bowl MVP after rushing for 166 yards and a key 43-yard touchdown on 4th-and-1 that gave Washington the lead in the fourth quarter. The win capped off a strong postseason run and marked the Redskins’ emergence as an NFL powerhouse in the 1980s.
