LOS ANGELES TIMES, June 5, 1989

* Ali Khamenei becomes Iran's Supreme Leader
* China's Tian An Men Square slaughter
* Jewish survivors of "Voyage of the Damned"

Iran, China, the plight Jews... Sounds like front page headlines from this morning's news. The same players continue to command attention. The front page has: "Iran Mourns; New Leader Chosen, President Khamenei Takes Khomeini Spiritual Role to Avert Power Struggle", which tells of Khamenei becoming the Supreme Leader of Iran upon the death of Ayatollah Khomeini. As of 2025, Khamenei remains in his role and is currently (as of this listing) the longest-standing leader in the Middle East.
The banner headline has: Firing Convoys Roam Beijing" with subhead: "More Tanks Are Sent Into Square", which provides a day-2 update on the slaughter of Chinese student-protesters in Tian An Men Square. Yet another front page story has: "Survivors Recall 'Voyage of the Damned'", which tells of the U.S. rebuff of the Jews aboard the MS St. Louis who were escaping Hitler's Germany. All three articles mark significant event sin U.S. and world history and include both related photos and additional inside reporting. A very displayable issue.
All major sections are present, some toning at the mid-fold, nice condition.
