background: On November 2, 1963, in Saigon, South Vietnam, President Ngô Đình Diệm and his brother Ngô Đình Nhu were assassinated during a coup led by South Vietnamese military officers. The coup was carried out with the tacit approval of the United States, which had grown increasingly disillusioned with Diệm’s authoritarian rule and his failure to quell internal unrest. After being promised safe exile, the brothers were instead captured and killed in the back of an armored personnel carrier. Their deaths marked a turning point in the Vietnam War, leading to political instability in South Vietnam and deeper U.S. involvement in the conflict.
