Item # 716646
July 20, 1916
EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, July 20, 1916
* Pancho Villa expedition
* Post Columbus, New Mexico raid
* United States soldiers pursue Mexican bandit
The front page has a nice banner headline: "VILLA LOCATED; CAPTURE NEAR" with subhead. (see images) Nice for display. Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper. Rare as such.
Complete with 12 pages, small library stamp within the masthead, a little irregular along the spine, generally very nice.
background: On July 20, 1916, Pancho Villa was actively being hunted by U.S. forces led by General John J. Pershing as part of the Punitive Expedition launched after Villa's attack on Columbus, New Mexico, earlier that year. Despite extensive efforts and deep incursions into northern Mexico, Villa remained elusive, using his knowledge of the terrain and local support to evade capture. Tensions between the U.S. and the Mexican government under President Carranza were rising due to the continued American military presence. By this date, Villa had not been found, and the expedition would ultimately fail to capture him before ending in early 1917.
