Item # 716637

September 28, 1914

EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, Sept. 28, 1914

* First Battle of the Ainse River - France ending
* German Empire vs. United Kingdom & France
* World War I - WWI

The front page has a banner heading:  "Prussian Guard is Almost Annihilated in Fighting" with subhead and related photo. (see images) Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper. Rare as such.
Complete with 12 pages, a little irregular along the spine, generally very nice.

background: The First Battle of the Aisne, fought from September 12 to 28, 1914, was an early World War I conflict on the Western Front following the Allied halt of the German advance at the Marne. As the Allies pursued the retreating Germans to the Aisne River, both sides entrenched themselves, marking the beginning of the prolonged trench warfare that would define much of the war. The battle ended inconclusively, with neither side able to break the stalemate, signaling a shift from mobile warfare to a grueling war of attrition.
