1907 racecar driver Barney Oldfield...

Item # 716614

April 22, 1907

THE EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, April 22, 1907

* Barney Oldfield - pioneer automobile racer
* Lakeside, California speedway - racetrack
* Probably only found in a S.D. publication

The front page of section two has a four column headline: "OLDFIELD BEATS WORLD'S RECORD 1 1-5 SECONDS AT LAKESIDE TRACK" with subheads. (see images) Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
Complete with 10 pages, small library stamp within the masthead, a few small binding holes along the spine, generally very nice.

AI notes: In April 1907, Barney Oldfield, a renowned American race car driver, competed at the Lakeside Track in San Diego, California. Driving his famous "Green Dragon" vehicle, Oldfield set a new record by completing a mile in 51 4/5 seconds, demonstrating his exceptional skill and the advanced capabilities of his car. The Lakeside Track, established in 1907, was one of the first purpose-built auto racing facilities in the United States, offering a safer and more suitable venue for racing compared to the public roads and horse tracks previously used. Oldfield's achievement at this event not only enhanced his reputation as a leading figure in auto racing but also helped to popularize the sport during its formative years in the early 20th century.
