Note: The 1929 Gastonia incident, also known as the Loray Mill Strike, was a major labor conflict in Gastonia, North Carolina, where textile workers protested low wages, long hours, and poor working conditions. Organized with support from the Communist-affiliated National Textile Workers Union, the strike faced fierce opposition from mill owners, police, and vigilantes. Violence erupted in June when Police Chief Orville Aderholt was killed during a raid on a striker camp, leading to the arrest and trial of several union members. Though the strike failed to achieve its goals, it drew national attention to labor issues in the South and became a symbol of the broader struggle for workers’ rights, inspiring songs, novels, and activism.
