Note: The Jamestown Rediscovery project, launched in 1996 by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (now Preservation Virginia), aimed to locate and excavate the original 1607 James Fort, the first permanent English settlement in North America. Led by archaeologist Dr. William Kelso, the project successfully uncovered the remains of the fort—long thought lost to the James River—including palisade walls, buildings, wells, and thousands of artifacts. These discoveries provided groundbreaking insights into the lives of the early colonists, their interactions with Indigenous peoples, and the challenges they faced, fundamentally reshaping our understanding of early American history.
