Note: On August 24, 1938, Captain George Eyston set a new land speed record driving his Thunderbolt car on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
Eyston's achievement was celebrated worldwide and marked one of the last great land speed records before World War II.
Thunderbolt remains an iconic symbol of pre-war engineering ambition.
