Note: On December 13, 1944, the U.S. First Army achieved a significant milestone by exiting the Hürtgen Forest and reaching the Roer River in Germany. This marked the culmination of the grueling Hürtgen Forest Campaign, which had commenced in September 1944. The campaign was characterized by intense combat, challenging terrain, and severe weather conditions, resulting in substantial casualties on both sides.
The First Army's advance to the Roer River was strategically important, as it set the stage for future operations aimed at crossing into the heart of Germany. However, this progress also left the First Army in a vulnerable position. Just three days later, on December 16, 1944, the German military launched a major counteroffensive known as the Battle of the Bulge. This surprise attack created a significant "bulge" in the Allied front lines and led to intense fighting in the Ardennes region.
