Note: Later in August, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons unfolded as the third carrier battle of the Pacific War. Both U.S. and Japanese naval forces launched air strikes against each other without direct ship-to-ship combat. The U.S. Navy succeeded in sinking the Japanese light carrier Ryūjō and damaging other vessels, while the carrier USS Enterprise sustained damage. The Japanese lost approximately 75 aircraft and many experienced aircrew, hindering their ability to reinforce Guadalcanal effectively. This engagement provided the Allies with a strategic advantage, delaying Japanese plans and contributing to the eventual success of the Guadalcanal Campaign.
