Note: On September 24, 1945, U.S. Representative Leslie C. Arends, a Republican from Illinois and member of the House Military Affairs Committee, announced that a new "super" atomic bomb had been developed. He stated that this bomb would make the one dropped on Hiroshima seem like a mere "small fire-cracker." Arends emphasized the devastating potential of this new weapon, claiming it could annihilate entire cities and kill millions in a single operation. He highlighted the vulnerability of major urban centers, including Washington, D.C., and New York City, to such attacks .
This announcement came just weeks after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, which led to Japan's surrender and the end of World War II. The Hiroshima bombing on August 6, 1945, resulted in approximately 70,000 immediate deaths, with total casualties reaching around 140,000 by the end of the year due to radiation exposure and injuries .
Arends' statement underscored the rapid advancements in nuclear weaponry and the emerging arms race that would characterize the ensuing Cold War era.
