The iconic Iwo Jima flag raising photograph...

Item # 715097

February 25, 1945

SUNDAY NEWS, New York, Feb. 25, 1945

* Iconic Joe Rosenthal photograph
* Battle of Iwo Jima - Volcano Islands
* Mount Suribachi summit reached
* United States Flag planting (historic)

Although we have had several issues with included within a printing of the iconic Pulitzer Prize winning photograph of the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi, this is by far the best we have seen.
The famous photo takes the entire front page of this tabloid-size newspaper, with the only text: "Our Flag Flies Over Suribachi". The photo is captioned: "The Spirit of '45---U.S. Marines of the 28th Regiment hoist Old Glory atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo."
Reporting on the current battles on Iwo Jima begin on page 3 with related photo. A few more photos are in the centerfold. (see images)
The photograph by Joe Rosenthal more typically appeared in much smaller size and often on an inside page. This is the only newspaper we have located which has the photo consume the entire front page. It would quickly reach legendary status and would receive the Pulitzer Prize for photography just 2 months after it was taken, an exception to the normal rule of awarding prizes the following year.
Complete with 72 pages, Tabloid-size, various chipping at the margins, but nothing into the front page photo. Mostly loose along the spine, generally good.

Note: This issue comes with a free acid-free folder for protection
