Item # 714739
THE NEW YORK TIMES, May 4, 1962
* 1st image televised using a satellite (TV history)
* Project Echo - communications satellites
* Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
The bottom of the front page has a photo of the very first TV picture sent across the U.S. by satellite. The two column heading: "Television Pictures Are Relayed Coast-to-Coast by Echo Satellite" First report coverage continues on page 14. This historic achievement actually took place about 10 days earlier but this was when it was first made public.
Complete with 56 pages, light toning and a little wear along the central fold, generally very nice.
Note: The February 24th transmission was the first successful satellite transmission and first two-way communication from space. This project foreshadowed countless man-made satellites in orbit acting as 24-hour communications and data relay stations seamlessly across the globe. Echo demonstrated the future potential of satellite communications and interconnected relationships between private enterprise and NASA. The partnership formed six decades ago led to the most technologically advanced communications satellites ever developed that provide near-instantaneous contact to anyone on the planet.
