AI notes: On September 29, 1920, the Black Sox Scandal broke wide open when a grand jury indicted eight players from the Chicago White Sox for allegedly conspiring to fix the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Among those accused were stars like Shoeless Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte. That same day, White Sox owner Charles Comiskey suspended the players, even though they had not yet been tried. The scandal shocked the sports world and led to the appointment of Kenesaw Mountain Landis as the first Commissioner of Baseball, tasked with restoring the integrity of the game. Though the players were acquitted in court in 1921, all eight were permanently banned from Major League Baseball.
