The President requests permission to declare war... The first issue published...

Item # 710749

June 27, 1812

THE WAR, New York, June 27, 1812

* Volume 1 number 1 issue
* President James Madison
* Declaration of War asked

This is a very interesting newspaper as it existed for one purpose: to report the news from the War of 1812. It began publication shortly after the war began, & ceased to publish once the war was over.
Of significance is that this is the first issue published: volume 1, number 1.
The front page is taken up with the: "Introductory Retrospect" in which the editor reflects upon the events previous to this day which led to the War of 1812.
Beginning on the front page and taking all of page 2 is the: "Manifesto - To the Senate & House of Representatives of the United States", this being the President's request to Congress to declare war against England. It is signed in type: James Madison. A very significant document.
Terrific to have this document in a war-focused newspaper.
Four pages, 9 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.

AI notes: In June of 1812, President James Madison sent a formal message to Congress requesting a declaration of war against Great Britain, citing repeated violations of American neutral rights, impressment of American sailors into the British navy, interference with U.S. trade, and support for Native American attacks on the western frontier. Madison framed the conflict as a defense of national honor and sovereignty, emphasizing that peaceful measures had failed to resolve ongoing British aggression. Congress responded quickly, and on June 18, 1812, the United States officially declared war, marking the start of the War of 1812, a conflict that would test the young nation’s resilience and military capacity.
