Historical Background: In 1946, Australia and the United Kingdom established the Anglo-Australian Joint Project, a collaboration to develop and test guided weapons. The project was a response to Germany's use of V-1 flying bombs and V-2 rockets during World War II. The British sought a testing site in Australia because of the UK's population density. The project's centerpiece was the establishment of a long-range weapons testing facility at Woomera, South Australia.
