Susan B. Anthony charged with illegal voting...

Item # 708644

June 22, 1873

NEW YORK TIMES, June 22, 1873

* Susan B. Anthony indicted for voting

A bottom corner of the front page has a small and discrete report headed: "The Case of Miss Susan B. Anthony--Prosecution Suspended" which is a brief mention of her recent indictment for illegal voting.
Eight pages, a small bit from the lower spine causes some text loss in the first column, not remotely close to the mentioned report, otherwise nice condition.

background: The June 22, 1873, report in the New York Times captured a calculated moment of legal stagnation following one of the most controversial trials in American history. Just days prior, Justice Ward Hunt had stripped Susan B. Anthony of her right to a trial by jury by directing a guilty verdict and imposing a $100 fine for her "illegal" vote in the 1872 election. The "Prosecution Suspended" headline subtly reflects the court's refusal to imprison Anthony after she defiantly declared she would never pay a penny of the fine. By not pursuing her further or locking her up, the government strategically denied her the opportunity to file a writ of habeas corpus, effectively blocking her path to the Supreme Court where she hoped to argue that the 14th Amendment guaranteed women the right to vote. Thus, that small corner of the front page didn't just report a pause in a case; it documented the exact moment the legal system decided to ignore her rebellion rather than risk making her a martyr for the suffrage movement.
