October 21, 1797
COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Oct. 21, 1797 Page 2 has a very historic "Proclamation" signed in script type by the President, John Adams, in which he proclaims now that the United States Mint is fully operating all foreign coins (Spanish milled dollars excepted): "...will cease to pass current as money within the United States...". The United States now has its own functioning coinage system.
This is followed by a very brief yet notable report: "Between the hours of twelve and one, wind and weather permitting, a third attempt will be made to launch the CONSTITUTION Frigate. It will be high water at half past 12 o'clock."
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, slightly irregular at the blank spine, foxing.
