Death of Robert E. Lee, in a Southern newspaper...

Item # 705985

October 13, 1870

THE GREENSBORO PATRIOT, North Carolina, Oct. 13, 1870

* Robert E. Lee death
* Confederate general

 All columns on pages 2 & 3 have black mourning rules for the death of Robert E. Lee.
Among the articles inside are " Dead" which has near the beginning: "...with the mournful intelligence that Robt. E. Lee is no more. This sad announcement will wring a wail of grief from millions of hearts..." with the balance taking half a column.
Another article is headed: "Death of General Lee--Public Meeting".
On a different topic but equally as interesting is: "How Shocking" about Jefferson Davis being considered as president of N.C. State University, and the strong feelings against it.
Four pages, archivally rejoined at the spine, nice condition. Great to have this report in a Southern newspaper.

AI notes: Robert E. Lee died on October 12, 1870, at his home in Lexington, Virginia, after years of declining health, including heart problems, at the age of 63. Following the Civil War, Lee had devoted himself to education as the president of Washington College, working to restore the institution and promote reconciliation between the North and South. His death was widely mourned throughout the United States, with newspapers from both former Union and Confederate states commemorating his military skill, personal honor, and efforts toward national healing. In Lexington, thousands attended his funeral, including students, local citizens, and former Confederate officers, while his burial on the college grounds underscored his close association with the institution he had sought to transform. Lee’s passing cemented his legacy as a revered, though controversial, figure in American memory, symbolizing both the valor of the Confederacy and the broader effort to reconcile a divided nation in the Reconstruction era.
