THE VILLAGE VOICE (weekly), Greenwich Village, New York, July 1, 1971
* Joseph Colombo shot at Columbus Circle
* Second Italian Unity Day protest rally
* Colombo crime family mafia mob boss
* Reference to "The Godfather" novel
* LAST ONE IN INVENTORY ****
The front page has a one column heading: "Colombo linked to Village" and four related photos. (see images)
Page 59 has a banner heading: "At the hospital: just like 'The Godfather'" This had to be a reference to the novel because the movie wasn't released until the following year. Actually they were in the process of making this iconic film with the help of Colombo himself.
wikipedia notes: On June 28, 1971, Colombo was shot three times by Jerome A. Johnson, with one bullet hitting him in the head, at the second Italian Unity Day rally in Columbus Circle sponsored by the Italian-American Civil Rights League; Johnson was immediately killed by Colombo's bodyguards. Colombo was paralyzed from the shooting.
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
It is worth noting that "The Village Voice" was an American news and culture paper, known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. Founded in 1955, the Voice began as a platform for the creative community of New York City.
Complete with 88 pages, tabloid-size, one crease across the center, generally in very nice condition.
Provenance note: This issue comes from The Village Voice's own archives, part of their in-house collection used to create their digital archive. Rare as such.
