background: The Battle of Manila on August 13, 1898, is famously remembered as a "Mock Battle" because it was a choreographed military engagement designed to facilitate a face-saving surrender for the Spanish Empire. Facing certain defeat but forbidden by Spanish code to surrender without a fight, Governor-General Fermín Jáudenes struck a secret deal with U.S. Commodore George Dewey to stage a brief bombardment and assault that would allow the Spanish to yield to the Americans rather than the surrounding Filipino revolutionaries. While the transition was intended to be bloodless, the "script" broke down due to poor communication and the unexpected advance of Emilio Aguinaldo’s Filipino forces, resulting in several dozen casualties. Ultimately, the Americans successfully seized the city and barred their Filipino allies from entering, a move that effectively ended 333 years of Spanish rule while simultaneously igniting the deep-seated tensions that would lead to the Philippine-American War just months later.
