AI notes: Abraham Lincoln lay in state in Philadelphia on April 22–23, 1865, as part of his long funeral journey from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Illinois following his assassination on April 14. His coffin arrived by train on the morning of Saturday, April 22, and was taken in solemn procession through the city to Independence Hall, a site chosen deliberately because Lincoln had once said there, in 1861, that the principles of the Declaration of Independence were the foundation of his political faith. The casket was placed in the Assembly Room, directly beneath the Liberty Bell, and the public was admitted beginning at noon; an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 mourners filed past over a 24-hour period, many waiting hours for a brief glimpse. Throughout Philadelphia, buildings were draped in black, church bells tolled, and businesses closed, making the city one of the most emotionally charged stops on the funeral route. Lincoln’s body departed Philadelphia early on Sunday, April 23, continuing westward toward New York City.
