background: The First Armistice at Compiègne was signed on November 11, 1918, and marked the end of fighting on the Western Front in World War I. It was negotiated between representatives of the German Empire and the Allied Powers, primarily France, Britain, and the United States, in a railway carriage in the forest of Compiègne, France. Under the terms, Germany agreed to cease hostilities, withdraw its troops from occupied territories, surrender weapons and military equipment, and accept the eventual signing of a peace treaty. The armistice was initially intended to be temporary but effectively ended the war, leading to the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. It is famously remembered for being signed at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month, a symbolic moment still commemorated today as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.
