background: In April 1862, the Union Navy under Flag Officer David Farragut launched a daring campaign to capture New Orleans, the Confederacy’s largest city and a crucial port on the Mississippi River. The operation began with the bombardment of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, which guarded the river approaches, as Union mortars and ships pounded the Confederate defenses for several days. On the night of April 24–25, Farragut’s fleet boldly ran past the forts under heavy fire, navigating chains, obstacles, and Confederate guns, a risky maneuver that allowed them to advance toward New Orleans. With the forts neutralized and the city exposed, Confederate forces offered minimal resistance, and New Orleans surrendered on April 25, 1862, giving the Union control of the lower Mississippi River. The capture dealt a devastating blow to the Confederacy, cutting off vital trade routes, undermining morale, and marking one of the most significant naval operations of the Civil War.
