A fascinating newspaper published during the Boer War under "siege" conditions. Note above the dateline: "Issued Daily, Shells Permitting".
Items include: "Events of the Day" "Eloff Takes the Fort" "The Baralongs Rose to the Occasion" "Boer Treachery" and more.
Six pages, 8 1/4 by 13 inches, the first 2 leaves printed on very white, high-quality newsprint, the back leaf is slightly larger and of lesser quality. Great condition.

AI notes: The Mafeking Mail – Special Siege Edition was a remarkable newspaper produced during the Siege of Mafeking from October 13, 1899, to May 17, 1900, amid the Second Boer War, under the direction of Colonel Robert Baden-Powell. Printed under extremely challenging conditions by the besieged British garrison, the publication appeared daily, “shells permitting,” on single-sheet broadsheets of various colors due to paper shortages. Its content included war news, local events, general orders, and morale-boosting articles, often noting the number of days under siege, serving both as a vital source of information and a psychological lift for soldiers and civilians alike. Despite the constraints of siege life, the Mafeking Mail demonstrated ingenuity and resilience, becoming a historic symbol of courage and communication in adversity, and today, original issues are highly prized by collectors for their rarity and historical significance.
