With "Confederate States Of America" in the dateline...

Item # 705397

December 28, 1863

CHARLESTON DAILY COURIER, South Carolina, Dec. 28, 1863

* From the origin of the American Civil War

This was one of just a few Confederate newspapers that printed in the dateline: "Confederates States Of America".
Among the reports are three front page Acts of the Confederate Congress; "Siege of Charleston"  "Atrocities of the American War".
Most of the back page is taken up with advertisements with some military "Orders" as well.
Complete as a single sheet issue, wide margins, wear at margins and some rubbing at folds, generally good.

background: In 1863 the Charleston Daily Courier was one of the most prominent Confederate newspapers, publishing daily war reports and political updates from Charleston, a city under increasing Union pressure. Its pages that year reflected the shifting fortunes of the Confederacy: early issues carried dispatches from generals like Braxton Bragg and P. G. T. Beauregard describing battlefield maneuvers in Tennessee and Mississippi, while spring editions chronicled naval skirmishes involving ironclads and commerce raiders such as the Alabama and Florida. As Union forces tightened their blockade and advanced on Charleston, the Courier reported both local anxieties—such as rising prices and slave auctions—and Confederate resilience, often framing military engagements as evidence of Southern determination. By late 1863, during the Siege of Charleston, some issues even bore the rare “Confederate States of America” dateline, underscoring its role as a voice of Southern nationalism. The Courier thus served as both a news source and a propaganda instrument, offering readers a distinctly Confederate perspective on the war at a moment when Charleston itself stood at the center of Union military strategy.
