Thanks to George Washington... Intercepted news from Silas Deane...

Item # 704132

December 05, 1781

THE FREEMAN'S JOURNAL OR THE NORTH AMERICAN INTELLIGENCER, Philadelphia, Dec. 5, 1781  Much of a front page column is "Contents of a Rebel Mail, Lately Intercepted in Europe" being a continuation of Silas Deane's letter to his brother. There is much content on America's relationship with France and Spain as it relates to the war. It carries over to take an entire column on page 4.
Deane was an American merchant, politician, and diplomat, and a supporter of American independence. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress where he signed the Continental Association, and then became the first foreign diplomat from the United States to France, where he helped negotiate the 1778 Treaty of Alliance that allied France with the United States during the American Revolutionary War.
Page 3 has a wonderful address: "To his Excellency George Washington, General and Commander in Chief of the allied army"... from William Moore, President of the Pennsylvania Assembly. He offers much praises for Washington's efforts which resulted in victory over the British. This is followed by Washington's reply, signed in type: Geo. Washington.
Then another letter of congratulations & thanks from the Speaker of the House of Assembly in Pa. to Washington, again followed by his thankful response & signed: George Washington.
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, in great condition.

Item from Catalog 354 (released for May, 2025)
