NEW YORK TIMES, March 16, 1864

* Abraham Lincoln
* More troops order

Among the front page column headings on the Civil War are: "From Washington" "Another Call for Troops from the President" "Two Hundred Thousand More Men Wanted" "A Draft Ordered for the 15th of April" with the draft document signed: Abraham Lincoln.
Eight pages, nice condition.

AI notes: On July 22, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln issued a call for 500,000 additional Union troops to reinforce the Union Army during the Civil War. This request came amid ongoing and intense military campaigns, including the Siege of Petersburg and General Sherman's advance toward Atlanta. The call emphasized the urgency of maintaining military pressure on the Confederacy. Volunteers were encouraged, but a draft was threatened if enlistment quotas were not met by September 5, 1864. Lincoln’s move reflected both the mounting costs of war and his commitment to preserving the Union at all costs, especially as the 1864 presidential election approached.
