Item # 703726
January 09, 1790
GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES, New York, Jan. 9, 1790
* 1st President George Washington
* First State of the Union Address (SOTU)
A very significant issue, as page 3 contains George Washington's very first state-of-the-union address, taking over a full column and signed by him in type: G. Washington.
His address reflects upon the first year of the Presidency, beginning a tradition of addressing Congress at the conclusion of each year which continues to this day.
Also on page 3 is a report reading: "The President of the United States, when he address the two Houses of Congress yesterday, was dressed in a crow colored suit of clothes, of American manufacture. The cloth appeared to be of the finest texture--the color of that beautiful changeable hue, remarked in shades not quite black. This elegant fabric was from the manufactory in Hartford."
This is reflective of the pride America took in weening itself away from British manufacturers, as it become more dependent upon products made in the states.
Of added significance is this address was given just the day prior and appears in a newspaper from the city of the capital at that time, New York City.
Four pages, a bit of foxing and some toning to the right & top margins, two small archival mends. Generally good condition.
