THE UNITED STATES MAGAZINE, Philadelphia, June, 1779
* The only American magazine that published during the heart of the Revolutionary War
In the entirety of the Revolutionary War only two American magazines existed, they being this one and the "Pennsylvania Magazine" which published in Philadelphia as well, from January, 1775 thru July, 1776.
The "United States Magazine" was the only American magazine that published during the heart of the war and lasted but one year from January thru December, 1779. The next such attempt would not be until October, 1783 when the war was essentially over.
The rarity of this title is such that in our 48 years we have had but one opportunity to purchase several issues.
Page 2 has a letter signed by the governor of Virginia: T. Jefferson. Other content includes a continuation of the: "History of the Present War"; a very lengthy "Address to the Inhabitants of America" signed in type by John Jay; the Constitution of New Jersey; "Adventures of a Continental Dollar"; current reports on the Revolutionary War including a letter signed by: P. Henry. Such letters from the famed Patrick Henry from during the war are exceedingly uncommon.
Also the: "Articles of Capitulation Agreed on Between Col. George Rogers Clark & Lieut. Gov. Hamilton, commandant of Detroit, dated Fort Sackville, Feb. 24, 1779".
Complete in 48 pages, wide, untrimmed margins, 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches, full title/contents page, great condition.
