Image of Lincoln, and the Republican platform...

Item # 702432

June 22, 1860

GOODHUE COUNTY REPUBLICAN, Red Wing, Minnesota, June 22, 1860

* Rare image of a beardless Abraham Lincoln
* 1860 presidential campaign notice

The top of page 2 has one of the better political notices supporting Lincoln for President we have seen, and much desired by collectors.
Although the text is simple and typical: "For President, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, of Illinois.  For Vice President, HANNIBAL HAMLIN, of Maine" the focus is the rare image of a beardless Abraham Lincoln above it. We have only found a few newspapers that had an image of Lincoln in the political notices.
The back page has nearly a full column taken up with: "The Republican Platform".
Four pages, nice condition.

AI notes: Images of Abraham Lincoln from 1860 showing him without a beard are quite rare because he began growing his beard late that year, after receiving a letter from 11-year-old Grace Bedell in October suggesting it would improve his appearance and help him get elected. Most photographs and portraits produced during his presidential campaign, including widely circulated studio portraits, show him with a beard, making pre-beard images uncommon. Only a handful of daguerreotypes and formal studio photographs taken earlier in 1860 capture Lincoln clean-shaven, and these are considered historically significant and highly collectible due to their scarcity. As a result, beardless images from that year are unusual, providing a glimpse of Lincoln just before he adopted the facial hair that would become his iconic look.
